Dear Fellow Photograher

While we all like to work in our field, sometimes we get the feeling that the art has gone out of our photography. We get creative cramps or simply dry spells. Then, there is the question of where to show and when. Well, we sometimes feel this way too.

The Renaissance Art Gallery announces its 2nd Annual Fine Art Photography show scheduled for July 2010. This is an open entry show, meaning it is open to all photographers 18 years of age and older. Photographers will be able to submit up to 3 photos to be displayed at The Renaissance Art Gallery for the month of July with the theme of “Color Complements”. Each photo should show the strong use of color.

Cash awards will be given to the best interpretation of color and color complements. (Complementary colors are colors opposite each other on the color wheel.) But it is how you use color as an element in the photo that will count.

Now, all work must start out as a photograph. But afterwords………. This is where we can all get creative! Lets get to work in that virtual dark room and show what we can do!

Entries can be brought into The Renaissance Art Gallery June 18, 19 & 20 during normal gallery hours, or shipped to:

The Renaissance Art Gallery
C/o Lillianne Bowersock
3743 River Park Road
Ona, WV 25545

Photos should be framed and ready to hang. Shipped entries should be postmarked by June 15th. For more information call or stop by The Renaissance Art Gallery. Or contact us by phone or e-mail.

Summer is fast approaching

Summer is fast approaching The Renaissance Gallery. And with it will come the heat.

Deep in the heart of winter we all longed for the heat of summer! But when it gets here, we long for something else...

But summer also brings out the artist in us. And the summer art shows and festivals.

June will be an especially busy month for all the artists of the Renaissance. Our second session of digital photography will be starting Tuesday, June 1, 2010, and our first workshop in Digital photography.

But our regular classes are still running, Monday and Saturday painting classes, Wednesday drawing for both Juniors and Adults, and Saturday Afternoon figure drawing classes.

Linda Helgasson will have a one-woman show in the Kumkum Majumdar Exhibition Hall, "Barely There," with an opening reception Sunday, June 6th, 2-4 pm.

And don't forget, our 2nd Annual Fine Art Photography show will be opening in July, with submission dates, June 16,

Art Exhibitions & More

Art Exhibitions for The Renaissance Art Gallery

May is quickly coming to an end, leaving only two more weeks for the Spring Fine Arts Exhibition, Color Compliments. These beautiful artworks will be coming down and going home soon, but there is still time to see them.

But that does not mean the wall will be bare for June. Linda Helgasson will be showcased, with her new show, “Barely There”. Linda is known for her inspired interpretations of the human body. Opening reception for “Barely There,” will be Sunday, June 6 from 2-4 pm.

Also in June, The Renaissance Art Gallery will sponsor a workshop for photographers, “High Dynamic Range Photography” at the gallery, followed, June 26 with “Hot Shoe Lighting”

These workshops lead into our July Fine Art Photography Show and Competition, “Complimentary Colors”. Photographers interested in participating in this show should contact The Renaissance Art Gallery. Also in July will be the third and final photography workshop, “Table Top Photography—Still Life”.

Of course, we have our usual range of fine art classes, painting, drawing and carving as on-going classes, and this schedule can be viewed on the Gallery website or come in to the gallery and talk to one of the artists on duty there. http://www.orgsites.com/wv/renaissance/index.html

Photographic Challenge

For artists who choose the camera as their medium, there are many challenges, the first is to convince the public that photography can and is fine art. We are so familiar with the snapshot, the group mug shot at the Grand Canyon, vacation pics and wedding photos that seeing what comes through the camera lens as fine art can be a real leap. There is a world of difference between taking and producing a Fine Art Photograph and snapping off a quick shot. But we have to show the world the difference!

To showcase photography as fine art, as a medium that takes as much creative thinking and hard work, The Renaissance Art Gallery is going to host its second Annual Fine Art Exhibition in July 2010.

The challenge this year is “Color Complements” and the photography should focus on the use of color in the composition of the photograph. The Prospectus is available now at The Renaissance Art Gallery. Or you can download a copy from The Renaissance Art Gallery website: http://www.orgsites.com/wv/renaissance If you wish a copy by mail send a SASE envelop to:

The Renaissance Art Gallery
900 8th Street, Suite #20
Huntington, WV 25701

While this challenge might seem daunting, it is doable. Take a look around and see just how much color plays a part of our everyday life. The photographer in you will be up to this challenge.

Using Photography to create your Art

Scary Stories

Many artist use photography today to capture images for reference to create works of art from later. Norman Rockwell created all of his illustrations from photographs. Most of them were staged to help him develop his vision of a project. Other artists use photography to freeze the moment so that you have that image to refer back to. Norman Rockwell would project the photograph onto the canvas to sketch out the basic details of the subject.

He may incorporate a number of photographs into a single composition. I recently have been trying my hand at the same process. Not only have I found the method very effective but extremely rewarding but also relaxing. It is also helping me develop ideas for more photographs and causing me to think more visually. Here is a shot of my new drawing area at home. (
http://mikeadkinsphotography.com/blog/ ) You will notice the Artograph Projector mounted to my drawing table. This allows me to project my picture onto the drawing board so I can sketch the basic outline of the subject. This is the same method that Norman Rockwell used. You can find out more about how Norman Rockwell developed his illustrations in the book "The Search for Norman Rockwell's America by Kevin Rivoli"

If you would like to learn about how to use your camera and take great photographs from an Artist Point of View, I am offering a course in Introduction to Digital Photography at the Renaissance Gallery.
