The Renaissance Art Gallery To Reopen

 

Come inside and enjoy the warmth that art and artists can provide.

 

The Renaissance Art Gallery was closed during the month of January but will reopen Saturday February 1 from 12-4 p.m. We are all happy and exciting about being back.

 

The artists of the Renaissance cooperative will also be displaying some of their art at the entrance to the dinner theater for the play "Twelve Angry Men".  The dinner and play will be at the Renaissance Ballroom Friday and Saturday Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, 2014. The art can be viewed after 5:30 p.m. both days. The Renaissance artists are planning a busy schedule this year with exhibits, art classes, workshops and painting demos.  To find out more call the gallery at 304-525-3235 and check our website at http://www.orgsites.com/wv/renaissance/  We offer classes in watercolor, oil and drawing by artists Fern Christian and Sue Tshantz.  There are also special classes for children. Pati Payne will be giving a workshop in watercolor and Laura Moul will hold a workshop on photography.

 

Sunday March 9, 2-4 p.m. there will be an opening reception for an exhibit of paintings and original pottery The show “Mother and Son : It is in the Genes". Art by Clarice Kumlien and her son Eric Kumlien will be on display at the Renaissance Gallery until March 20.

 

Starting Feb. 1, 2014 the gallery will be open it's regular hours of Friday and Saturday 12-4 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m. Come in out of the cold, have a cup of hot tea and enjoy the original art by the eight cooperative members.

Fern Christian On Cold Wax Oil

 

 

This is the painting that is done with oil  paint, hard wax, and fused with heat. I liked the way it came together, but, I didn't use a good substrate!

 

I guess it can be called "Dining on Crow "

 

I did something  I always tell my students not to do.

 

 

 

Never paint on a substrate that is not intended to be permanent. Or at least considered better than cardboard.

 

Needless to say, I grabbed a canvas board and explored an idea. I did put a coat of gesso on with a painting knife before I started. Yes it looks OK, but because of the quality of the support, or rather the lack of quality of the support, I will not be able to really show or offer this piece. It is simply not up to my professional standards.

Fern will not sign this work, nor offer it for sale because, using a substandard substrate put this below her standards of excellence.

Color Wheel

Another student of the Wednesday Open Studio has submitted her color wheel.

 

Rather than the standard color wheel, where you mix paints to achieve the right hues, we took another approach.

 

 The assignment was to make a color wheel using found objects and arranging them on their choice of wheel. The object was to help them learn to judge color, to work with color in a real world situation. The student could use any object(s) to populate his/her wheel. And any round object to put the wheel on. Mix and match was fine. Objects could have a theme or not, as the artist/student choose.

 

Julia finished her wheel, a mix of fabrics, pompoms, marbles and butterflies. She decided to locate the butterflies as compliments of color, adding a nice touch to the wheel.

 

Community Service Award for Fern Christian

Renaissance Art Gallery Director, Fern Christian, with Kathy Hollet, was honored with  TSAA’s Community Service award at their 2013 Christmas Dinner.  Both of these strong women have served on TSAA's board of Directors, served as president, and have literally spent thousands of hours on countless committees to support TSAA's mission and its membership.

 

Fern and Kathy are the first recipients of TSAA's Community  Service Award. Recipients of the award must have a minimum of 10 years of uninterrupted membership and community service in the association to be eligible for this award.  Both Fern and Kathy have far exceeded these minimums and set the bar high for future award recipients.

 

A member of Tri-State Artists Association since 1968, Fern has been supportive of artists in the Tri-State area and is the founder and director of an artist-cooperative gallery, the Renaissance Art Gallery. She also teaches painting on Monday mornings from 10:00 am until noon.

Kathy has worked tirelessly whether she is mentoring new members, teaching, or writing grants. Fern has spend over a decade building the Renaissance Gallery for local (coop)artists. The Renaissance gallery hosts a national show which brings art from all over the United States and abroad to the Tri-State region.

Elaine Hahn - People's Choice Award

The Renaissance Art Gallery is happy to announce the winner of the 13th Annual National Miniature Exhibition’s People’s Choice Award

 

This year the visitors and patrons of the Renaissance Art Gallery have chosen Elaine Hahn’s “Sunset Glow” as their favorite miniature. This is truly an outstanding work, of great vision and depth. Although only 1 inches wide by 4 inches long, this work draws the eye. "Sunset Glow" is an oil painting done on copper plate. Elaine is a resident of Holiday, Florida

Elaine is a resident of Holiday, Florida and has been a regular participant in the Renaissance Art Gallery’s Miniature Exhibition.

Encaustic Miniatures



Encaustic Miniatures by Fern Christian

 

 

These pieces represent a new media to the Renaissance Art Gallery’s Annual Miniature Exhibition. The use of Encaustics. While an ancient medium it is currently undergoing a revival with new technicalities. It is, in the words of artist Fern Christian, “the most fun you can have with an iron!”

The Renaissance Art Gallery has held several workshops to re-introduce this media to the area and this year featured works in encaustics.

 

Fern Christian has employed a small iron as both pallet and brush to create swirls of abstract color. Her work invokes strong moods, “Storm Gathering”, Fantasy Fly” and “Day of Delight” describes feeling. Artist Susan Tschantz takes a more traditional approach with hot wax and a brush in “Red & White” and “Vase on Green”.

Encaustic proved to be a very popular medium. Many visitors were completely fascinated with the introduction of this medium this year.
