May 6,7 & 8 2011.
Who's minding the store?
Cartoonist Gary Labelle will be sitting the gallery on Friday May 6. This will be the first full day of our 4th Annual National Spring Exhibition, “Parks & Recreation” show. While the main gallery is still being worked on, the exhibition hall is open and packed with fine art. All the tags are now up, and you can see just who won what. Gary is always ready to welcome guests to our gallery. You can also see the progress we are making in the main gallery.
On Saturday our director Fern Christian will hold down the fort after her morning painting class. Knowing Fern, she will have the teakettle on, so come in and join her. Linda Helgason will be in charge of The Renaissance Art Gallery on Sunday, Mother’s day, a good day to take mom to a very friendly art gallery.
The weather is supposed to be better, still somewhat rainy, but not so cold and a bit brighter. Hopefully the worst of the spring rains are past and we can all start to get out and enjoy life a little more. The Gallery is really looking forward to some better weather.
Now for Other Things.
Ron Haeberle will be resuming his work on the main gallery. The closer it get to being done, the more anxious we all are for construction to be done. The Floor has been done, the center wall is up, now we need the new lighting and the south wall to be upgraded.
A Word on our Art Classes
Classes are going strong. Both of our adult painting classes, lead by Fern Christian are active and will be held as usual this week, but drawing classes, held on Wednsdays, are being canceled for the next two weeks. Artist Susan Tschantz will be out of town. Both the Junior Art Class and the Adult drawing Class will resume May 25, 2011. So that means that the May 11 and the May 18th studio hours will not be held and all classes on those days are canceled. If you have any questions, contact The gallery by phone at 304-525-3235 or e-mail at gallerywv@yahoo.com.

Life Drawing Class - Fall 2010

Artist S. Tschantz
First Saturday1st of 6 drawing days.
Figure drawing started last Saturday after the summer hiatus. It took a little effort to get things organized, but we made it.
It was good to get back to basic—real live drawing. First pose lasted a bit more than the scheduled 20 minutes. Time-boy forgot to set the timer at first! Since Time-boy is also lighting-man, this is understandable and forgivable. Lighting-man had to rush back to is own easel to start his drawings.
Thankfully the oppressive hot weather seemed to break by Saturday, so the gallery was comfortable. We still needed the little fan for Lynn, our model, but we were able to turn off our loud, stand alone air conditioner. One of the drawbacks of being in an old historic building is old pre-central air wiring!
Support and media
Interesting was the different approaches by the artists. Most use large sketchpads, spiral bound to keep the pages together, but not all. There were several newsprint pads as well as one artist who brought a box of full size drawing paper sheets. These sheets or pad were put on easels, but one artist brings a more manageable size pad, which gives her the freedom to walk around the room for just the right point of view. Since she works off a pad she can comfortably hold, she is not tied to one spot.
With this variety of formats is a variety of media. While everyone has an array of pencils, other media is also employed. There were charcoal pencils, vine charcoal sticks, pens, pencils, colored pencils and water media. One artist routinely “sketches” with watercolor washes.

Artist L. Helgasson
There are 5 more Saturdays in this fall session of figure drawing, and there are still 2 spots available to local artists. This session runs through Saturday October 30, 2010, ending the Saturday before the Miniature show.
Location:
The Renaissance Art Gallery is convenient for West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Southern Ohio, and all adult artists are welcome to one or more drawing sessions.
Class meets Saturday afternoon, 1-4 pm in the Exhibition Hall of The Renaissance Art Gallery.

Things I like about The Renaissance Art Gallery
It is a friendly place.
It is a place for everyday, blue-collar working artists to get together.
It is small enough to feel comfortable. But large enough to make an impact.

Summer is fast approaching

Summer is fast approaching The Renaissance Gallery. And with it will come the heat.
Deep in the heart of winter we all longed for the heat of summer! But when it gets here, we long for something else...
But summer also brings out the artist in us. And the summer art shows and festivals.
June will be an especially busy month for all the artists of the Renaissance. Our second session of digital photography will be starting Tuesday, June 1, 2010, and our first workshop in Digital photography.
But our regular classes are still running, Monday and Saturday painting classes, Wednesday drawing for both Juniors and Adults, and Saturday Afternoon figure drawing classes.
Linda Helgasson will have a one-woman show in the Kumkum Majumdar Exhibition Hall, "Barely There," with an opening reception Sunday, June 6th, 2-4 pm.
And don't forget, our 2nd Annual Fine Art Photography show will be opening in July, with submission dates, June 16,

Art Exhibitions & More
Art Exhibitions for The Renaissance Art Gallery
May is quickly coming to an end, leaving only two more weeks for the Spring Fine Arts Exhibition, Color Compliments. These beautiful artworks will be coming down and going home soon, but there is still time to see them.
But that does not mean the wall will be bare for June. Linda Helgasson will be showc
ased, with her new show, “Barely There”. Linda is known for her inspired interpretations of the human body. Opening reception for “Barely There,” will be Sunday, June 6 from 2-4 pm.
Also in June, The Renaissance Art Gallery will sponsor a workshop for photographers, “High Dynamic Range Photography” at the gallery, followed, June 26 with “Hot Shoe Lighting”
These workshops lead into our July Fine Art Photography Show and Competition, “Complimentary Colors”. Photographers interested in participating in this show should contact The Renaissance Art Gallery. Also in July will be the third and final photography workshop, “Table Top Photography—Still Life”.

Using Photography to create your Art
Scary Stories
Michael Adkins - Photographer and Gallery Member
(304) 634-2025
mike.adkins@verizon.net
Many artist use photography today to capture images for reference to create works of art from later. Norman Rockwell created all of his illustrations from photographs. Most of them were staged to help him develop his vision of a project. Other artists use photography to freeze the moment so that you have that image to refer back to. Norman Rockwell would project the photograph onto the canvas to sketch out the basic details of the subject.
He may incorporate a number of photographs into a single composition. I recently have been trying my hand at the same process. Not only have I found the method very effective but extremely rewarding but also relaxing. It is also helping me develop ideas for more photographs and causing me to think more visually. Here is a shot of my new drawing area at home. (
http://mikeadkinsphotography.com/blog/ ) You will notice the Artograph Projector mounted to my drawing table. This allows me to project my picture onto the drawing board so I can sketch the basic outline of the subject. This is the same method that Norman Rockwell used. You can find out more about how Norman Rockwell developed his illustrations in the
book "The Search for Norman Rockwell's America by Kevin Rivoli"If you would like to learn about how to use your camera and take great photographs from an Artist Point of View, I am offering a course in Introduction to Digital Photography at the Renaissance Gallery. If you ever considered getting into digital photography to help you with your art and was a little intimidated by the technology this is the class for you. I cover everything from the basics of holding your camera, composition, lighting, to the ways to capture the best images.
To find out more about the classes and what we cover please refer to my web page http://www.mikeadkinsphotography.com/introclass.html
Class sizes are very limited and are taking on a first come first served bases. If you think you would like to take the class please email me to reserve a spot for you. The cost of the classes are $125.00 + tax. They run for six weeks and are from 6:30-8:30 on Tuesday evenings.
Note: You should have a Digital Camera for the class. If you would like some recommendations for a camera please let me know and I can help you decide.

Working with the Color Wheel
We hear about color wheels and color complements and triads, but how you to apply this to real life? The colors you see printed on the wheel don’t always match what you run into in life or in paint.
The junior drawing class at the Renaissance Gallery took a stab at relating to the color wheel this week in preparation for the Spring Fine Arts Exhibition, “Color Complements”, being staged at The Renaissance Art Gallery next month.
Today, these art students helped to create an installation piece, “Working With The Color Wheel”.
First came the wheel, the color wheel to display in the welcome to the exhibition. Also needed was to highlight the primary colors and their complements and show what happens when you mix them. Anyone who have ever taken an art class will remember boring making a color wheel can be. But this had to be more than a simple wheel, it also had to be art and decorative. Taking a basket of silk flowers, a grapevine wreath and a pair of wire cutters, a most unusual color wheel was constructed

Next color complement display. Gla
ss marbles served as the color constant, placed in clear votives, where the light can shine through. Next, the best complement was selected from silk flowers and stood up in the votives, then the votive were arranged in the window,
Food Coloring and clear glass bottles make up the last presentation, working with color. Batches of water were mixed up with the 3 primary colors, and 3 bottles were filled with these. Then the remaining colors were used to mix the complements, and the last 3 bottles were filled with these. Then the bottles were arranged on the windowsill where the light will shine through them. A little fiddling and re-arranging for the most pleasing presentation was made.
This installation piece both brightens the gallery and is already proving to be a handy learning tool. The adult photography class, which follows the junior class got a first hand look at color and how light e
ffects it.

This Sunday will be a busy day after hours for The Renaissance Art Gallery. While Sunday is one of our busiest days for visitors, it is also turning out to be a busy day for students and
artists.Sunday means that more people will be able to enjoy our current show of Kumkum Majumdar’s Batik work. This is a first class show that has brought a lot of praise to the gallery. This week is also the third Sunday of the month, which is our traditional day for both board meeting and general business meeting of the gallery artists. After the meetings, and after the gallery officially closes, there will be two after hours classes. Vince Jarrell’s regular carving class and a make-up class for the Figure Drawing Class. Because of the harsh weather this winter, it was hard to keep to a schedule with the figure drawing class. It was decided to offer these students a make-up class this week. The weather looks like it will be good, and the model is scheduled so all should work out well.
That is one of the great pluses with The Renaissance Art Gallery and our location in the old High School, is that we have room for these activities. It makes it a great meeting place for everyone in the community.
Carving for Fun and Profit 4-6 pm.
Figure Drawing 4-7 pm

Weather and Art Classes

It looks like we finally have a break in the weather. The last few weeks have been killers! But it seems we are getting a break, back to our normal winter weather. Gallery will be open and classes back to normal this week.
The Ron Haeberle show is still up along with new works by other gallery members. Susan Tschantz has several new paintings up and will be hanging one drawing she did for her adult drawing class, "Bridge over the Avon." The drawing is a graphite pencil drawing, 8 x 10 done with a photo reference supplied by Helen South of about.com drawing & sketching site.

Figure Drawing

The weather does not appear to be cooperating with the Renaissance Gallery this week. More snow, so many will not be able to make the Figure drawing class this week, but there is always next week!
With the bad weather, don't rush!
Sue Tschantz will be maning the gallery tomorrow, however, and will have the hot pot on for tea and coffee.
Linda Helgesson has her display of firgure drawings up for view, as well as new works by the rest of the gallery members, including Ron Haeberle.

December 19, 2009 a beginning
Welcome to the blog of the Renaissance Art Gallery in Huntington, WV. We are an artist co-op consisting of local artist who are showing original art, all local grown as an alternative to mass produced, generic art that has no relevance to the local culture.
We are located in down town Huntington, in the old high school building, corner of 8th street and 9th Avenue. This building has been repurposed to serve the needs of the community, rather than simply tearing it down.
Each year we have a number of open entry shows which bring rather unique artwork to the public notice.
We also have ongoing classes for both adults and kids.
