Art Trading Card Meet & Swap

Saturday was our 3rd ATC meet and swap.

If you missed it, you missed a great time!

Tables quickly filled and everyone really got into it.

We had a couple of decks of cards, paper, scissors, glue and a wide array of pencils, everything from 100% graphite through tinted graphite, charcoal, and many, many colored pencils.

The watercolor pencils proved very popular! They were precise but still allowed you to flow the pigments.

A lot of people got creative with scissors, and applied a wide range of papers to the cards for tinting and manipulation. The collage method of altering the cards was really fun.

The ladies from Charleston brought in a lot of sample which the rest of us found inspiring. Everyone was able to do several cards, so had some to keep and some to trade.

Pati Payne used watercolors to do a smashing little landscape, which was trading for before she was done! (sorry, went so fast, no picture!)

Hosting the Renaissance Art Gallery March 16, 17, & 18 2012

Flower Power
Pati Payne

Friday March 16, 2012 will see Linda Helgason hosting The Renaissance Art Gallery. Linda has been drawing and painting nudes for nearly twenty years. Short, vigorous poses are her favorites.

Pati Payne will be in Saturday March 17, 2012. She is from Ironton Ohio, and is a painter of memories. She likes to paint the people, places and things she wants to remember. Many years ago she started doing a painting of every flower given to her as a gift. This January for her birthday she was given two vases of flowers and a live potted orchid. Her paintings of these flowers will be on display at the Renaissance Art Gallery. You can see these paintings; "Flower Power", "Variety", and Orchids in Bloom" when you visit with Pati as she hosts The Renaissance Art Gallery Saturday March 17, 2012.

“I will be working Saturday March 17 and anybody is welcome to come in and get a free watercolor lesson from me.” ~ Pati Payne.

Pati taught painting classes at Ironton Ohio University Community Education but as she says: “I know a lot more about painting now!”

Sunday March 18, 2012 is a gallery gather day, when all the artists of The Renaissance Art Gallery will be available at the gallery from 1-4 pm.

New Art Show a Success!

All three artists at the Reception, Laura Moul, Linda Harbison and Pati Payne
Sunday's Opening reception for "3 Media, 3 States" was a big success. Many long time gallery friends as well as new visitors crowded the 2 rooms of the Renaissance Gallery enjoying both the art and fellowship in our Gallery. Linda Helgasson again hosted a beautiful reception.

Admiring Linda's work.

All three artists, Laura Moul, Linda Harbison and Pati Payne got the accolades they deserved while welcoming friends and family to The Renaissance Art Gallery. The artwork flowed from Laura’s landscape photography to Pati’s intimate watercolors through Linda’s “Camden Park” series. Linda sculptures added an interesting punch to the show.

Read the Huntington Herald's review of the opening

While the reception was well attended, the show itself is hanging in the main gallery until October 16, 2011, so there is till time to come in and enjoy this wonderful show!

Robbie Poore and Fixing up the Gallery

Another week has gone by. March is quickly coming to an end. I came into the gallery and finished up addressing and labeling the reception postcards invitations for the May Fine Arts show. Now all I need are stamps and they can go out the first 2 weeks of April.

We are all working on Robbie Poore’s reception April 3. Robbie has done quite a bit of work on his show. I know that these are all new pieces. Robbie has made sure no one has seen these before, so I think it will make the show rather special.

I am hoping for a large turn out for the reception. This will be Robbie Poore’s first show with The Renaissance Art Gallery. There has been a lot of interest in his work shown since he joined the gallery last fall. I know the 3 pieces he entered in the Miniature show in November caused quite a stir! I can’t wait until the entire room is made over in his bits and pieces.
New Walls
Ron Haeberle is working on the new display wall in the main gallery. It is really going to be something, and will improve the look and flow of the gallery. We have some major changes to The Renaissance Art Gallery. It is going to make such a difference in what we can display. While we all love being in a historic building, having historic wiring is not nearly as much fun! Just having the new circuits has already made a difference. With the new display wall and proper display lighting, the main gallery will be much more inviting.

Spring at The Renaissance Art Gallery

Bud
S. Tschantz
I Saw A Bud

Pulling into The Renaissance Art Gallery parking lot last Wednesday, I saw a small green bud. The radio was casting out the news of coming bad weather-a return to winter come the weekend,

But I saw a bud

And it was encouraging.

Returned Mail

Waiting by the computer were 3 envelopes containing the prospectus for the Spring Fine Arts Show, “Parks & Recreation”. All were local and all were “return to sender”, “undeliverable as addressed” “unable to forward”. There was a couple more in the mailbox. Like I said, all were local. Of the 10 that came back 9 were members of Tri-State Art Association. So someone is not keeping up their contact information!

If you do not receive your prospectus for the Spring Fine Arts Show by the end of the week, check to make sure we have your current address. All our addresses were taken from the last two open entry show’s entry forms. Another reason to make sure when you use these forms that they are legible. If you did not receive a form, please write to us and update your contact information.

You can get a prospectus by coming into the gallery, or you can request one by e-mail. Renaissance Art Gallery e-mail is gallerywv@yahoo.com.

Anyone interested, is 18 years old or older and lives in North America can also request a prospectus from us, or download one off The Renaissance Art Gallery website.

R. Poore

Assemblages

Robbie Poore has his artwork ready for his April show, but is sweating over the dreaded Artist’s Statement. How many of you have actually written such a document? One of the harder pieces of prose to write! How to you talk about something that is essentially instinctual? An artist’s statement is only second to the Artist’s Biography is giving us poor visual people the hives! If writing the artist statement is soul-bear in its intensity, the artist’s Biography can be down right embarrassing. There is just something about talking about yourself in the third person that seems utterly ridiculous. There is always the question of what to include, what to leave out not to mention, does anyone ever really read those things?

Renaissance Gallery Hours Return

Called on account of the weather.

January was a wash out for the Renaissance Gallery. Snow and ice along with record breaking cold made it impossible to open the gallery for regular Gallery Hours. February is just about over, and hopefully the really bad weather that has kept the Renaissance Gallery all but closed.

WhileSuper cold weather and heating troubles forced us to abandon regular gallery hours, Studio Hours remained in tact. But a gallery needs gallery hours! So.......

Renaissance Art Gallery
 We're Back!

The Renaissance Art Gallery will be open for normal gallery hours starting this Friday, February 25, 2011.  Wowho!

It has been a long time. But we put the time to good use. Electricians were in and did some wiring upgrades. We now have several new outlets,  and more importantly, new circuit that will allow the installation of a better lighting system.

Let there be light!
Remodeled Wall in Main Gallery

Lighting is all important in a gallery, and so far, ours has been adequate, but not great. That will soon change. First the main gallery is being remodeled to be brighter, lighter and more accessable. A new wall system will increase our display area while making it easier to get around. The floor will be painted a lighter, more reflective color in the next couple of weeks.Artist and designer Ron Haeberle will be putting up new display walls with their own track lighting. This is exciting, because it will allow us to display not only more art, but larger pieces. Very good for the local art community. We have wanted to do this for a long time, and it is finally coming together.

Art Display at
Renaissance Art Gallery
Let There Be Art!

Sunday we got out the calendar and made sure all the hours were covered. And everything was in hand to have gallery hours again. Most of the artwork will be in the Kumkum Majumdar Exhibition Hall, while the Main Gallery remodeling is finished up, but there will be art!

We are also working on plans for the Spring Fine Art Show. Prospectus is up on the gallery website or you can get one by e-mailing the gallery. E-mail address is gallerywv@yahoo.com.

2nd Annual Fine Art Photography Show

The Show is hung. All the Photos are up, and the judging is done. All that that remains is the opening reception for 2nd Annual Fine Art Photography Exhibition. The reception will be this Sunday, July 11, 2010 at The Renaissance Art Gallery. Awards will be announced at this time along with the awarding of prices. Reception is from 2-4 PM in the Kumkum Majundar exhibition Hall, part of The Renaissance Art Gallery. The room is located on the ground floor of the former Huntington High School building, corner of 8th Street and 9th Avenue. The reception is free and open to the public.

This year’s show focuses on the use of complementary colors in photography. There is a high standard of work, with many innovative and new photography forms. This is the perfect opportunity to see what is happening in fine art photography today. The art in this show will hang until August 1, 2010.

Come in out of the hot sun and enjoy some cool art.

Artist Co-op Gallery

The Renaissance Gallery offers a venue for working regional artists to show develop as working artists by interacting with their peers and the community at large.
The gallery differs from the Huntington museum of art in its focus on regional living artists. While the museum is supportive of regional artists and offers educational opportunities to the community, its focus is largely archival. Maintaining a growing collection of important art, and brings national shows to the area. The Renaissance Gallery can focus its efforts on developing the local artistic community, offering a physical place to display work not just of its members, but also of other local artists. Giving them the opportunities needed to grow their talent.
We want to offer an active studio experience. The museum does offer studio space, it is as a landlord, an authority figure, at one step removed. Individual artists are like the orphan Oliver "please sir, can I have more!"
The Renaissance gallery is more artist-directed. Offering an on-going experience, that tri-state does not offer. Here, the artists must be interactive with each other and the community at large. We can offer smaller, more mentor driven classes.
With solid funding we can offer more opportunities for regional artists to stretch themselves and expand their working knowledge of art and media. It is the perfect setting for the self-taught and folk artists to get hand-on experience.
As the name implies, the Renaissance Gallery can be a cultural revival, home to a period of vigorous artistic and intellectual activity, a regional Renaissance.

How the Renaissance Gallery Impacts the Community

Renaissance since its inceptions has been involved with the community, and one of biggest impacts we ever had was just after 9/11 when we held an auction through Renaissance to help raise some money for the Lower Manhattan Art Gallery. They lost 2 artists in the north tower during that tragedy and ALL of their young artists lost their materials and art they had already completed.

We raised about $1900 or so to send to them to help the young artists buy new materials and get started again. Renaissance members and Tri State Arts Association members donated all the art. It was a great time and we all felt like we had done something meaningful to help during that tragedy.

Impact on community

The Renaissance Art Gallery is located in the heart of the city of Huntington, on the corner of 8th Street and 9th Avenue.

It is accessible to most people, being located on the ground floor of the former Huntington High School, fast becoming a regional center for the arts.

One afternoon, after an article in the local paper invited all to see the Miniature show, a large group of around 18 handicapped adults from a nearby adult day care center walked over to see the show.

Although it was a cold day, all were enthusiastic about seeing the show. The artist on duty was able to tell them about the miniature art form and to discuss individual paintings and works with them. They found answers for their individual questions were encouraged to learn that many of them could make such art themselves. Their enthusiasm for the show and interest in art was a joy to see. They all enjoyed personal attention and interaction. They viewed art displayed accessibly in an atmosphere that encouraged them to really explore the art and interact with the gallery personnel and within their group. The conversation was lively and irreverent at times, but clearly a pleasure for those who attended. Without this show, they would not have been able to view so much art in a venue where they felt at home.

I think experiences like this make all the work worth it.

Our gallery is located in a converted high school building. Part of it, the gym and such is now a YMCA. Much of the classroom area has been converted into senior and low-income housing. But the auditorium and music and some science rooms in the front of the building is now an arts centre for the town. People who would not ordinarily see fresh, new art see our shows.

Time for Color

Time is closing in on the Color Complements. Starting this Friday, 12-4 pm The Renaissance Art Gallery is accepting entries for the 3 Annual Spring Fine Arts Exhibition. Everyone should make sure their works are labeled and all paper work is filled in. For those who have lost their prospectus, copies are available at the gallery and the artists on duty will be more than happy to help you.

The gallery is located on the corner of 8th Street and 9th Avenue, on the ground floor of The Renaissance Building, the former Huntington High School. Gallery opens at 12 pm and will remain open until 4 pm both Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are from 1pm until 4 pm. For more information call the gallery at 304-525-3235.

The Renaissance Art Gallery

The Renaissance Gallery is an artist’s run co-op gallery in Huntington, West Virginia dedicated to bringing the finest in local original art to the region. As a real brick and mortar gallery, we give local artists a place to display their work and local people a place to see the best the region has to offer. It is accessible to most people, being located on the ground floor of the former Huntington High School, fast becoming a regional center for the arts. We are an easy, comfortable place for people to show and see artworks in West Virginia and the Huntington area.

Membership in our gallery is open to adult artists. As a co-op each member shares in the running of the gallery, taking turns “sitting the gallery” and participating in all the duties and privileges of membership in this cooperative

The Gallery is open to artist and artistic expression, and we routinely display a wide range of art including: Landscape and still life, abstract, batik, photography, experimental art, sculpture, drawing, Miniature Fine Art, and we have commemorative pieces by the Art Resources For The Tri-State.

Our artists work in many mediums including oils, acrylic, fabric, both film and digital photography, computer assisted art, glass, figure paintings. The gallery is open to new and experimental work.

We have an ever-changing exhibition hall, and 3 open exhibitions each year in which artists from all over the region are invited to share their work with the public. These shows are themed and a qualified judge evaluates the work. Each of these events is opened with a public reception. This is an opportunity for both the community to see the best available and for new and established artists to get to know one another and meet the community. We also have hosted local art education shows featuring the work of area students, and plan to expand this in the future. Educators interested in organizing a show for their students are welcome to contact the gallery for more information.

The members of The Renaissance Art Gallery also offer art classes to both adults and students, with classes at different convenient times. We have classes for beginners, hobbyist and mature, established artists.

We are dedicated to bringing artists and the community together.
