Spring into Watercolor - Watercolor Classes

 

 

Pati Payne, well known watercolorist and Renaissance Artist will be teaching beginning watercolor classes in May. Dates are May 2 and May 16, 2014. Classes will be held at the Renaissance Art Gallery from 1-3 pm. The cost is $20 if you have your own painting supplies and $25 if supplies are furnished. Pre registration required. The first week I will teach how to paint different kinds of trees and the second class we will do a painting with trees in it. Contact Pati at 740-533-1516  to sign up.

Watercolor Workshop

 

Pati Payne will have a one day watercolor workshop on painting sunflowers this Friday April 4, 2014, from 1-3 pm.  The cost is $20 if you have your own painting supplies and $25 if supplies are furnished.  Contact Pati at 740-533-1516  to sign up.

 

Pati Payne is a fine- arts painter in watercolor, oil and mixed media.  She paints the Appalachian life style from photographs that she takes of the people, places and things in her life.  Her paintings are done in the impressionistic style with color and light.

 

She works in her home studio in Ironton, Ohio and also enjoys painting outside en plein air around the tri-state.  Pati has been a dedicated artist for the past forty years.

Welcome Clarice and Eric Kumlien

“Mother and Son: It is in the Genes”

 

The art work of Clarice Kumlien and her son Eric Kumlien will be on exhibit at


the Renaissance Art Gallery

Clarice Kumlien is an active 86 year old artist that is president of the Ironton Artists Association, retired registered nurse and has been teaching a yoga class for the past twenty five years.  She does watercolor paintings of country landscapes and still life paintings of flowers and vegetables that she grows in her garden at Lake Forest, Ohio.

 

Eric Kumlien from Huntington, WV got his education at Marshall University where he studied many things including art. He enjoys all forms of printmaking and pottery.  He is currently making ceramics at the Huntington Museum of Art under Kathleen Knefskey artist in residence.

Everyone is invited and welcome to the opening reception at the Renaissance Art Gallery Sunday March 9th from 2-4 PM.

New Paintings from Pati Payne

Starting

I started "Around the Pond" and "Playing with Pumpkins" by drawing directly onto 300 lb cold press watercolor paper from photographs I took.

Then I used liquid acrylic paint to lock in my darks.

 

 

 

From there I used loose watercolor strokes to bring color and life to the paintings.

Dragon Lily

 

 

The dracunculus vulgaris also known by such names as  the voodoo lily, corpse flower and Dragon Lily is a rare beauty. This unusual flower, which blooms so beautifully but can smell like death is the subject of a new watercolor painting by artist Fern Christian. When this painting is completed, it will hang in the Renaissance Art Gallery.

The work in process is beautiful already. When finished it will hang in the Renaissance Art Gallery.

 

 

"I've had this plant for several years and each year I marvel at the beauty and size of the blooms . This year it rained so much it's scent was not present . Blessing ! The blooms come suddenly ,last briefly , then vanish --- everything is gone before you can decide exactly how you feel about such an unusual plant . I did get a photo and now I will try to express some of my mixed emotions ."

Ms Christian graduated from Marshall University in 1968 and later earned thirty hours of post-graduate credit in studio painting. She belongs to the Tri-State Art Association, of which is a past president. A signature member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society, she is an accomplished painter in many media. Currently she serves as the Director of the Renaissance Art Gallery and teaches painting Monday and Saturday mornings..

 

 

Snow in Watercolor

Watercolor Class

Have you always wanted to learn to paint with watercolors or have you been painting for years and need help to make your paintings better.

Pati Payne brings over forty years of painting experience to her classes. She can teach you the fundamentals of painting and the finer points that make a finished painting.

Her students this Saturday Dec. 8, will be doing a landscape painting of a waterfall with trees and rocks.

New classes will begin in January 2013. They will be held every other Saturday from 1 - 3 p.m. The price is $25 a class if Pati furnishes the supplies and $20 if the student brings their own art supplies. Pati Payne has so much fun painting and wants to share her love for watercolor. Things that will be taught in the classes are color, perspective, texturing techniques, light, painting the seasons and so much more.

Hosting the Renaissance Art Gallery March 16, 17, & 18 2012

Friday March 16, 2012 will see Linda Helgason hosting The Renaissance Art Gallery. Linda has been drawing and painting nudes for nearly twenty years. Short, vigorous poses are her favorites.



Pati Payne will be in Saturday March 17, 2012. She is from Ironton Ohio, and is a painter of memories. She likes to paint the people, places and things she wants to remember. Many years ago she started doing a painting of every flower given to her as a gift. This January for her birthday she was given two vases of flowers and a live potted orchid. Her paintings of these flowers will be on display at the Renaissance Art Gallery. You can see these paintings; "Flower Power", "Variety", and Orchids in Bloom" when you visit with Pati as she hosts The Renaissance Art Gallery Saturday March 17, 2012.

Pati taught painting classes at Ironton Ohio University Community Education but as she says: “I know a lot more about painting now!”



Sunday March 18, 2012 is a gallery gather day, when all the artists of The Renaissance Art Gallery will be available at the gallery from 1-4 pm.

Plein Air Through The Back Door

I wanted to work from life but also wanted to stay in where it was warm, so I stood at my kitchen door and painted part of the scene in front of me.

I call it, "Looking Out My Back Door" with apologies to CCR.

I literally stood looking out the back door to paint it. A while back at the artists of The Renaissance Art Gallery were talking about finding subject matter near at hand to where ever you happen to be. As usual, I can't remember who said what, but the idea of not making a special trek to some special place to find a worthy subject stuck with me. So I decided to try to find things to paint in my own neighborhood. I live in Flatwoods Kentucky, on top of a hill. My neighborhood is a collection of identical ranch houses. So when I look outside, I see the rooftops of all these simple, rectangular houses. There is also a baseball field in the distance, though you can only see part of a dugout from this point of view. I took several sessions to sketch the scene directly on watercolor paper. Since I had the luxury of seeing it every day, I watched the light from morning to evening to see when it was most interesting. It turned out that late afternoon to early evening light was the most dramatic, so I painted between about 3:30pm and 5pm.

Final Days for 3 Media, 3 States Show

It seems we were just gearing up for this welcoming show, but now it is down to the last 6 gallery days of 3 Media, 3 States show. It has been a wonderful show, but now it is getting time to move onto our 11th Annual National Minaiture show.

Pati, Linda and Laura did a super job of putting this show together. It is a great mix of ideas and representations. Comments from visitors have been very positive, with people really enjoying the different media.

There is still time to see all the wonderful works by these three artists. 3 Media, 3 State will hang until Oct 16th.
